Veneers can hide the stains that result from smoking. But not all dental veneers are identical in longevity and effectiveness. If you are a smoker,  you should take the time to study each type of veneer before you choose one. Here are the three main types of dental veneers. Each one responds to smoking and smoking stains differently.

Porcelain veneers

For a smoker, porcelain veneers are the best type of veneer. The main advantage of porcelain veneers is their ability to prevent staining. While natural teeth stain due to their porosity, porcelain veneers are stain proof. The surface of porcelain is smooth and free of pores, which means that smoking stains won't become an issue as they will with enamel. In fact, even if the tar and nicotine do stain porcelain veneers, brushing your teeth can help to remove them. Alternatively, a dentist can polish the surface of your veneers to remove the staining.

One downside to porcelain veneers is that they are the most expensive type of veneer. In addition, porcelain veneers require the removal of more tooth enamel than the other types do.

Composite bonding

Composite bonding is good for smokers or former smokers because it can conceal smoking stains. Once a dentist applies composite resin to the surfaces of stained teeth, the stains will no longer be visible. But while composite bonding can cover old stains, it won't stop new stains from forming.

Composite bonding is weaker than porcelain veneers and less stain-resistant. This means that eventually, your smoking habit will stain them. Fortunately, once your composite veneers stain because of smoking, your dentist can remove them and replace them with fresh veneers. However, this could become a problem if you can't afford to replace your veneers at the time of staining.

Lumineers

Lumineers are similar to porcelain veneers, but they are thinner. One advantage of them is that they are generally cheaper than porcelain veneers. So, while they do have a similar stain resistance to porcelain veneers because they are made of the same material, they won't prevent stains for as long. Eventually, you will need to replace your Lumineers due to stains from smoking.

Each type of veneer has its own advantages and disadvantages in regards to smoking. But if you want a long-lasting and durable way to protect your teeth from stains, then porcelain veneers are the best type of veneer for you. For more information, contact a cosmetic dentist.
